A domain name is the address of your website. It is like myspace.com or google.com which you can use to refer to your website. Any person can have its own domain name for his website. It is not necessary to have a company or organisation for this.Registering a domain name:
Getting a domain name involves registering the name you want with an organisation called ICANN through a domain name registrar. you will have to go to a registrar, pay a registration fee that costs approx US$7 to US$35 for that name. That will give you the right to the name for a year, and you will have to renew it annually . Suppose you want a domain name like http://www.yourwebsite.com/ you have to buy it with a domain registrar. Some web host will register it and pay for it for free but you have to place some advertisements given by host in your website. Some webhost will register it but you have to pay for it. Some web hosts also provide subdomain for your website as http://www.yourwebsite.webhost.com/ or www.webhost.com/yourwebsite these domains are available for free. You need not pay for it.
If you are going to register your domain name i will suggest you to buy with original domain registrar. Because some webhost buy domain name under their own name making them the owner of domain rather than you. Not all webhost do this.
